Grouse Season is Upon Us!

Hello Friends,

I’m happy to announce that this week we had our first 3-grouser of the season! Being the “grouse guy” (a name not self-applied, but bestowed on me by friends), I feel it is my duty to attempt to find Sharp-tailed, Dusky, and Greater Sage-Grouse on each and every tour I host. Alas, due to the fickle nature of grouse, the weather conditions of Northwest Colorado, and other factors beyond my control, this does not always occur. In our area, Dusky grouse are quite scarce before April, while the Sharpies and Sage-Grouse have been lekking for nearly a month. So you can imagine my excitement when I had my first Dusky of the season on April 1. We were treated again to this same bird just a couple days later.

One of the most rewarding parts of this job is the people I get to meet. We guide some really interesting and talented people from around the world. I would like to share some photos taken by a guest from China who experienced this Colorado grouse hat trick.

So, as we enter into the peak of this grouse season fully booked, we are already thinking of next season. If you missed your chance this year, get on the schedule now for 2027 and get a prime spot during peak lekking!
